South Tyrolean baked goods

Do you think South Tyrol has the epitome of delicious baked goods? Then we have the perfect tip for you.

On the first weekend of October, it will finally return: The South Tyrolean Bread and Strudel Market From 4 to 6 October, the Domplatz square in Brixen will transform once again into a celebration of bread! This event is always bustling with activities showcasing the fascinating history of bread, local traditions, age-old recipes, and baking methods of times past. And the children’s bakery will be whipping up some special treats to keep the little ones entertained.
And why Brixen you ask? Well, this charming bishop’s city boasts a rich baking heritage: Just wander through the old town and you’ll find around 10 bakeries overflowing with delicious homemade goodies. The Bread and Strudel Market is a haven for bread lovers, featuring a variety of local favourites alongside the well-known Schüttelbrot. Look out for regional specialties such as Vinschgerle, Pusterer Breatl, rye bread, fruit bread, and traditional Zelten bread – all waiting to tempt your taste buds.
Speaking of must-tries, let’s delve deeper into the famous Schüttelbrot. This hard, crispy flatbread is a staple on any marende (afternoon snack), mountain picnic, or Törggele feast (a traditional autumn celebration). Its history stretches back to a time when preserving food for the harsh winter was essential. Made with rye flour, water, yeast, salt, and spices, Schüttelbrot gets its unique texture from a good shake before baking. Interestingly, each South Tyrolean valley has its own twist on this beloved bread. And the secret to its irresistible flavour? A touch of clover and fennel seeds!
Feeling hungry for some traditional South Tyrolean treats? Circle the first weekend in October on your calendar and head to Brixen. The enchanting historical city will be filled with the mouth-watering aroma of freshly baked bread and strudel – a delightful experience you won’t want to miss!
