Where tradition meets family fun

Carnival in South Tyrol

Ready for a colourful, laughter-filled, and tradition-packed season? Carnival in South Tyrol offers more than costumes and sweets – it’s a mix of local customs and vibrant festivities for all ages.

Can you smell that tempting aroma of Carnival doughnuts in the air? Call them Berliners, doughnuts, or krapfen – whatever the name, they’re sweet, scrumptious, and signal the start of the fun-filled Carnival season. This is a time for dressing up, enjoying local traditions, and having a blast.

In villages across South Tyrol, Carnival is celebrated with age-old customs. Have you heard of the Zussl Race in Prato allo Stelvio/Prad am Stilfserjoch? Men clad in white outfits with clanging bells parade noisily through the village – a tradition said to chase away winter. Head there on 27 February 2025 and prepare for wide-eyed amazement from your little ones! Or why not enjoy the colourful processions in South Tyrol’s towns and larger villages? In Bolzano, masked revellers dance and sing through the old town as children gleefully toss confetti into the air. Meanwhile, Welschnofen’s “Schuffener” Carnival parade delights visitors from near and far. And let’s not forget the famous Egetmann parade in Tramin – it’s back for 2025!

Closer to home in Corvara, Carnival is also in full swing. On 4 March 2025, Mardi Gras, the traditional Carnescé festival and parade take centre stage. Picture fairy-tale characters, dazzling costumes, and cheerful faces on the ski slopes. Don’t miss the Ski & Acrobatic Show by the Pirates Freestyle Team. Fancy joining the parade and vying for the best costume prize? You can register on-site!

As you can see, Carnival in South Tyrol is much more than just a celebration. It’s a time for families, friends, and neighbours to come together, shake off the winter blues, and welcome the coming spring with joy.
