"Bachmandl" and his favourite place
A Henrik Ibsen documentary in Gossensaß
For the most famous poet of his time, it was clear: Gossensaß was his second home. Discover the lyrical side of this climatic health resort!
"The spirit of truth and the spirit of freedom – these are the pillars of society". These words are of Gossensaß’s most famous holiday guest. In the 19th century, railway opened South Tyrol to the world, which made both Gossensaß and Meran notable spa resort towns for tourists who craved an alpine retreat. Acclaimed Norwegian poet, Henrik Johan Ibsen, chose this village near the Brenner Pass seven times for his summer holidays. Ibsen worked mostly during the night, cleaned his inkwell in the village fountain early in the morning, and loved strolling along the mountain stream promenades, earning him the nickname “Bachmandl”. Follow his wise footsteps by booking your accommodation in Italy’s Dolomites. Take a journey through historical pictures, postcards, and personal letters of the “Magus of the North” at the Gossensaß town hall. A guided tour for the whole family is available on request.
