Six museums in six different places, right in the middle of the mountains: this is the monument that mountaineering legend Reinhold Messner has created. He calls this project his 15^th 8,000-metre-peak. All six expositions are worth seeing, but on holiday in South Tyrol with children, we recommend the museums at Bruneck Castle and at the top of Plan de Corones/Kronplatz.

The Messner Mountain Museum Ripa at Bruneck Castle is dedicated to mountain people from all over the world. Did you know that the modern alpinism is only about 250 years old, but that people have been living in the mountains for more than 10,000 years? They have given shape to the mountains of the world and carried their culture high up into the sky. At Bruneck Castle, Reinhold Messner shows what this actually looks like by means of his treasures from faraway lands and souvenirs from his countless journeys. There is much to discover and your children will be amazed by the exotic objects.

From the Messner Mountain Museum Corones, designed by star architect Zaha Hadid, the view wanders in all four directions. Here, the successful mountaineer presents the traditional alpinism that shaped him as a sportsman and which he helped shape. He tells of the improvements in equipment, of successes and tragedies on the great mountains of the world, and of famous pioneers of this sports. For your kids, too, it is an uplifting feeling to look beyond the peaks and feel very small in the face of the mountains.
